Real Wedding: Melody and Dan – October 21, 2011

11.30.2011 / Real Weddings / 2 comments

Normally, most of my communication is done with the Bride throughout the planning process and I often don’t even meet the Groom until the last few weeks/days. This case was a bit different. Dan, the Groom, contacted me back in the Spring to help him coordinate their incredibly organized and BEAUTIFUL fall wedding to be held at a small chapel in Exeter followed by a celebration at the Hilton Scranton. What I eventually came to find out is that the Bride is an event planner herself and he didn’t want her to have to do anything for this wedding, so he took the lead. Every one altogether now… “awwwww”.

So without further ado… enjoy.

This next picture is absolutely stunning, in my opinion. It’s the moments like this that I love.

And how adorable are these two little cuties? I also have to say that it makes me so proud to know that my efforts to NEVER be in any wedding pictures pays off when I see shots like this. I’m back there, but you can’t see me.

One of the groomsman, Chuck was absolutely ecstatic to get to ring the bell at the end of the ceremony. Can you tell?

Showing off her bling… can’t blame her, right?!?

Mel’s father was unable to attend the celebration due to health reasons, but Dan’s father was more than happy to share a dance with his newest daughter-in-law. In fact, Mel ended up dancing with all FOUR of Dan’s brothers, which was incredibly sweet.

This picture of Dan’s parents is just perfect to me. You can see the love in their eyes and the joy in their heart. THAT is my goal right there when I’m their age.

Mel & Dan – I can NOT thank you enough for allowing me to be a part of your day. It was fabulous, warm, full of love, families, and friends. By the end of the night, I felt like I was a part of it all and that truly warmed my heart.

We’ve all heard about “something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue”. Ok, but what do they all represent?

    According to Yahoo

Each item in this poem represents a good-luck token for the bride. If she carries all of them on her wedding day, her marriage will be happy. “Something old” symbolizes continuity with the bride’s family and the past. “Something new” means optimism and hope for the bride’s new life ahead. “Something borrowed” is usually an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. The borrowed item also reminds the bride that she can depend on her friends and family.

As for the colorful item, blue has been connected to weddings for centuries. In ancient Rome, brides wore blue to symbolize love, modesty, and fidelity. Christianity has long dressed the Virgin Mary in blue, so purity was associated with the color. Before the late 19th century, blue was a popular color for wedding gowns, as evidenced in proverbs like, “Marry in blue, lover be true.”

Negotiating Wedding Vendor Prices: my two points of view on this

When it comes to planning your wedding, one of the first things you need to do is establish your budget. Some do this by crunching numbers, visiting wedding websites like WeddingWire or TheKnot, or just by picking a number out of thin air that sounds good. Either way, you’ve come up with a number and now it’s time to get the most out of it.

photo by the best: swoon over it

As you start your search for vendors (photographers, videographers, wedding coordinators, DJs, florists, venues, etc.) that you think you may want on your “team” you will be looking at several different things: style, price, personality, price, location, reviews, price and value. Yep, that’s not a mistake. Unfortunately, as you journey along on your vendor hunt, PRICE will end up being one of the BIGGEST factors in making your decision. So, how do you make sure you are getting the best bang for your buck? Negotiate. Right??? Uhm…. well…..

Here are my two points of view:

POV #1: Negotiating can offend your vendor.

By asking a vendor to lower their prices, you are essentially saying that you think they are only worth that much – which may or may be true. In most cases (hopefully), this is the vendor’s passion. It is their livelihood. It’s how they support their families and it’s a big part of what they look forward to doing each day. If you tell them that you only want to pay them $X as opposed to the $Y that they quoted you, it has the possibility to make them feel like you are undervaluing their services/products.

POV #2: Give them a chance.

On the other hand, I think a vendor should be given a chance when it comes to competing for your business. Let’s use a DJ service, for example. Professional DJ #1 is offering their services for $1400 and you REALLY LOVE them. Professional DJ #2 is offering their services for $1000 and they’re OK. The budget is allowing for $1100 which makes Professional DJ #2 the BEST choice for your budget. But is it the best choice for your wedding day? Maybe – maybe not. In this case, I would suggest having a conversation with Professional DJ #1 and explaining your situation. Let them know a) why you want their services, b) if they’d be willing to work with you, and c) that you respect their decision either way.* Depending on a million different factors, Professional DJ #1 will choose to lower their rates or stick to their original quote. Sometimes they will ask for a review or testimonial or some other type of non-financial compromise in return. Either way, it is up to you and Professional DJ #1 to come up with a FAIR arrangement. Maybe, you’ll end up with a better DJ for a better value.

I say this because all too often I hear fellow vendors (along with myself) say their potential clients ended up going with a cheaper company just for the fact that they were cheaper. Sometimes, we are not given the opportunity to even try and compete. Is that fair?

*Note: When negotiating in ANY situation in life, RESPECT is the most important factor. Try to understand both sides of the situation and never ask for more than what’s fair. Insulting remarks will NEVER get you the cheaper deal – or at least it shouldn’t.

What are your thoughts? Are you the negotiating type? Are you a vendor that experiences this on occasion? How would you like a potential client to handle it? Or, as a bride, do you feel you shouldn’t have to negotiate?

  • Etsy Finds: Fa-la-la-la-la… I need some dang holiday cards for my #TWIPS!!

    11.14.2011 / Etsy Finds / no comments

Hello folks. Heads up – this is non-wedding related. Well, sort of. It kind of is. Because people that get married are humans too – and humans need holidays cards.

    Ha.

So, you may or may not know that I’m a member of TWIPS (Twitter Wedding Inspiration Pals) and for the holiday season, a few of us agreed to do a fun holiday card exchange courtesy of the fabulous Jessica of Two Wedding Belles. I’m a crafter by nature so of course I will be making some handmade little cuties to send out. But I was looking at THESE from Etsy and they made me smile. Naturally, I thought I’d share.

Real Wedding: Kristen and Ronnie – October 8, 2011 at the Woodlands Inn, Wilkes Barre

    11.07.2011 / Real Weddings / no comments

Now that the full speed ahead sign has been changed from a steady light to simply blinking, I am so excited to share my recap from Kristen and Ronnie’s wedding last month. (Last month?? How did I get so behind???)

Anyway, I met with Kristen and her awesome mom, Jeannette back in April. We talked for a while, got “shushed” by a group of people for chatting too loud (??), and I instantly fell in love. Since then, Jeannette and I would chat and share fun things on Facebook and I would look forward to every sweet email from Kristen. They are both truly magnificent women.

As for Kristen’s wedding day… the same awesomeness carried right through to her groom, Ronnie.

The two were married at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Pittston, Pennsylvania on what turned out to be a beautiful day with blue skies and birds chirping away.

By the way, this is dress number one…

After the wedding came the wonderful celebration at the Woodlands Inn and Resort in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania. For those that are unfamiliar with this place, it offers a great outdoor deck for parties, and indoor bar, sushi restaurant, Alexander’s Spa and Salon, night clubs, plus rooms to accommodate all of your guests.

First were the pictures on the grounds.

Followed by a night of great food, great dancing, and great flowers by my favorite Central Park Flowers

The dance floor was beautifully decorated by Mark from Collective Events Pros and the NY Times Band kept the guests on their feet ALL night long!

    Oh and dress number two…

All in all, it was a fabulous day filled with love, family, tears and laughter.

Style + Fashion: If I got married TODAY, this would be my pick.

    11.04.2011 / Style + Fashion / 2 comments

Living in the wedding world as un-engaged gal can be… difficult. Well, no not difficult. What’s a better word? Hmm – can’t think of one. So, to make it less “insert word other than difficult here” – I enjoy looking at different weddings, dresses, designs, details and thinking about what I personally think of them. All too often, I see details and send them over to my clients as inspiration for their own wedding, but rarely look for myself.

While I was perusing the J.CREW site this afternoon, I found this a-line wedding gown paired by the most perfect colored bridesmaid dress called “Fawn”.

Sigh… just beautiful. The best part? That wedding gown is under $1k. :)

Enjoy your weekend all – I’m off to a wedding rehearsal in Trexlertown, PA followed by some dinner with Mr. Blue Eyes to celebrate his birthday tomorrow!

Ummm can I be one of your bridesmaids? (a) because I love you and (b) because that dress really is one you can “totally wear again!” No alterations needed! Then again, I’m not surprised we have the same style…. :)
