Vera Wang’s Spring 2013 Bridal Collection – holy smokes

04.17.2012 / Style + Fashion / no comments

A few months ago we snuck a peek at Vera Wang’s Fall 2012 Bridal Collection set to be in stores July 2012. This collection featured the introduction of the color black to the wedding industry, as well as some darker tans and coppers. Despite the untraditional nature of the colors, I fell in love. Granted not every bride could or would sport a black (or tan) frock on their wedding day, but for those that would… well, it was hard not to swoon over the dresses.

But for her Spring 2013 Collection, Vera really outdid herself. During Bridal Fashion Week in NYC, she unveiled a new line of crimson dresses. I can’t say that I could EVER pull off this color, but they really are fantastic!

To see all of the looks from this runway, visit the Vera Wang Facebook page (where all of these pictures came from).

And what would you do? Is this too untraditional for your taste? Would your grandmother roll over and faint? Or would your friends absolutely die over how amazing you look? (Friends should do that no matter what you wear on your wedding day, FYI)

An explanation of where ‘dpnak’ came from.

04.16.2012 / Personal / 2 comments

When I’m around friends and family, I go by several nicknames including danie, d, dp, dpnak, stinks (my sister calls me that, don’t judge), and… well… danielle. (p.s. I never capitalize my name, bad danielle.)

Speaking of my sister, this is her on the left.

Her name is Melissa and she’s in the U.S. Navy (for 21 years now). She’s pretty much the coolest, smartest person I know. Back before she married her mister, her full name was Melissa Pasternak. For those in the military, you know that nicknames are abundant if you’ve got a long name so her’s quickly became Mel P-nak. Because she’s my older sis and I totally looked up to her when I was younger, I guess it stuck with me. By the way, she’s know Melissa Putnam which has turned into Mel Putty, or sometimes just Putty – which makes me chuckle.

So, here’s the breakdown:

Get it? Hopefully.

I love how your nickname came about. I wish I had a cool story about my mine. I have a long name too, and all my friends in grade school finally got fed up and nicknamed me Alex. I was confused for a boy on paper a couple times. Not OK. I love my first name :) even though I still respond to Alex when necessary. Lol

Thanks, Alexandra! For the record, I love your name. Sounds go regal and lovely.

Upgraded feature | Pocket Schedules from DPNAK + SimplYou Design

We are so happy to announce that we have added a fun new feature available for all of our clients: POCKET SCHEDULES!

Pocket schedules are mini-timelines created from your custom master timeline (included in most coordination packages). They include the key factors of your day (ceremony time, limo pick-up times, etc.) and are distributed to your bridal party members at your rehearsal. They are small enough to easily fit into a small purse or wallet – leaving no excuse for any groomsman or bridesmaid to be late to the party!

In order to really make these things amazing, I reached out my friend and colleague, Jessica Siegfried of SimplYou Design and I love what she created! With the ability to match the colors of your wedding party, these little cuties are a huge way to add some fun, organization, and style to your day. Plus, they include the names and phone numbers of your key vendors (including yours truly) so everyone stays in the loop. Cool, right?

all photos by me - don’t judge

If you’re a current client of DPNAK, you can add these to your package for a small fee. If you’re not a current client… wait! What??!! You need to be. :) Let’s chat.

    xo,

  • Vendor Spotlight | Maggpie Vintage Rentals

Last week, we made the uber-fun announcement that we’d be heading to the sunny state of California in September. Well, I can honestly say that I would NOT have  won the Backstage Bridal Scholarship contest if it wasn’t for the amazing talent and help of Maggie from Maggpie Vintage Rentals (and Kim Winey, too – of course!)

But, my relationship with Maggie started a while before that. A little over a year ago, I was bouncing through a local bridal show doing my normal gathering of business cards, hugging familiar friends and briefly meeting new ones. And then I stumbled across a fun booth gently decorated with crafty pieces mixed with some antique loveliness. It totally caught my eye, so I snagged a card, said a brief hello and told her I’d be in touch. To this day, she’ll still bust me that I sent her an email within a few hours of meeting her – but I was so excited about her and her business that I couldn’t wait! A few days later we met for a hot beverage and our courtship officially began.

Since our pow-wow, we’ve been involved in several projects together, both business and personal, and I’m so grateful to not only call Maggie a friend, but to introduce you to her and her bomb-diggity business. Ready? GO!

    Hello. Who are you?
Hi! We are Maggpie Vintage Rentals, a vintage rental company in NEPA. I say “we” because it is run by myself & my fiancé, Jason Hoak… we make a pretty unique team if I may say so…

photo by Jillian McGrath at this year’s Borrowed Event

Who or what got you started in the industry?

We initially got started in the industry because of my brother, Mark Farrell who runs Big Top Rentals, a NEPA tent rental company. We did a lot of work inside of tents (who would of guessed), a lot of modern-style weddings which, to much of your surprise, we realized wasn’t our niche. Starting to rent vintage pieces sort of occurred as an accident. We always knew how we wanted our wedding to be, but we knew we were on our own to collect the pieces we needed to achieve the look we were going for. During our down season from decorating traditional weddings we would spend countless hours searching for pieces for our own special day. As we started acquiring more and more pieces we were faced with the inevitable question, “what we going to do with all this stuff when we we’re done with it?! There must be other people looking for the same things we are, right?” We started doing our research on other people who rented vintage finds and for people who were looking for vintage finds. We quickly found that the supply wasn’t meeting the demand and a little over a year ago our journey began and we haven’t looked back since.

What is your favorite part about being in the wedding world?
Honestly, between the people we meet, the places we get to travel to, and the work we’re able to produce together, we love everything about it. But I guess if we had to pick one thing it’s going out and hunting for new finds. Gathering our inventory allows us to travel, explore new places and spend quality time together. We started this business based on the idea of our own wedding and it will always be an adventure to be shared together. Jason is my best friend and luckily we really never get tired of each other… ok once in awhile lol ;) but that’s just because he hates stopping at rest stops for me.

Besides weddings, are there any other special events that you service?
Yes! We’re never opposed to stepping outside of the wedding world and going in another direction. We’ve done photo shoots, dinner parties, holiday parties… we’re very open to new adventures.

Where do you go to be inspired?
I would have to say what inspires us the most is our inventory. It can be a piece we’ve had for months that can be seen in a different aspect than the last time or the overall hunt of the piece. The overall hunt opens up so many opportunities for inspiration. The place we got it from, where the piece originally came from or the physical story it tells from the wear of the item.

What sets you apart from other fellow professionals?
Besides the obvious of being a unique rental business, I think it’s how we acquire our inventory. First and foremost we are always looking for pieces that are authentically old and have original wear on them. After looking through so much stuff for so long and so often you start an editing process that weeds out the not so great stuff from the quality pieces. Sort of like how a photographer edits through a shoot he/she has just finished. The great stuff starts to appear without even thinking about it or forcing it. Thats when it really becomes fun. Where don’t we look for our pieces is probably the best answer to that question. Flea markets and auctions are great primary sources to get a great range and variety of finds but there are a hundred other ways we acquire things, yard sales, second stores, etc. – we can’t tell you all our secrets though.

Whether you’re single, married, divorced, widowed… we all have words of advice when it comes to relationships. What is your advice to couples tying the knot?
Have the wedding YOU want to have, do the things that are special to you. We’re very into “there are no rules” and “non traditional” aspects. This doesn’t mean your wedding won’t look like a wedding but when people can walk in and say “oh yes, this has their name written all over it” – I think that’s very special. It’s hard to not get caught up in all the small stuff but always keep in mind what this is all about at the end of the day.

Aside from weddings, what are some other hobbies/hidden talents/secret powers?
Jason & I can make ANYTHING! Ha – just kidding but Jason is quite the craftsman in the wood shop. I mean.. have you seen our farm tables? Yes he makes those and they’re pretty incredible. I am an amatuer sewer. I don’t follow patterns and I would most likely make a talented seamstress cringe but I can make it happen.. especially when it comes to making anything ruffled.

  • Style + Fashion | Two favorites from Ivy & Aster

    04.09.2012 / Style + Fashion / no comments

A few weeks ago, one of our June brides was positively gushing about her Ivy & Aster wedding gown. She had sent them a request for a custom piece and had said the process had been amazing so far. Killer designs + awesome service = I’ve got to learn more about this company!

Ivy & Aster was born from two childhood friends who grew up to meet their prince charming’s but couldn’t find the perfect dress to marry them in. They are lovers of fashion, vintage, feathers and frill and their designs are AMAZING.

Meet two of my favorites from their collection:

On the left is Poetry named for it’s soft layers. Softly shirred bodice has a sweetheart neckline and low back. Layered skirt softly flows. Ruched waistband is ornamented with a folded self fabric fan. Pockets in side seams. Price tag: $2875

On the right is Anemone. Refined but not simple, the Anemone dress is a vision of demure beauty. The slim column skirt leads into a soft mini train. Ruffle v-neck drapes over the shoulder and continues down the low v-back for a flirty finish. Ruched attached waistband ties into a soft back bow for a waist defining effect. You will be romance incarnate on your wedding day. Price tag: $1875

    Sigh…

    Enjoy your Monday everyone!

Holy crap balls | We won the scholarship!

    04.07.2012 / In the Press / 4 comments

Ok, I know I’m a little late announcing this amazing news here on the blog (another reason you should be following my on Facebook and Twitter). But this is the type of news I’m shouting from the rooftops!

WE WON THE BACKSTAGE BRIDAL PRO ACADEMY SCHOLARSHIP!!!

Back in the beginning of March, I teamed up with Kim Winey Photography and Maggpie Vintage Rentals to create this life-changing shoot as part of a scholarship contest. The Grand Prize Winner would receive a FULL scholarship ($2195 value) to the 4-day course for wedding professionals being held out in California this September. And we won!!!!! I’m still on cloud nine and have already booked my flight and transportation (over-prepared much??). Now I’m off to decide what I’m going to pack! Too soon? Ok, maybe.

To see the original entry, head over here and thank you to all of the amazing people who voted for the shoot and helped us snag this opportunity!! For more details on BBPro, read the details.

  • Tips + Advice | Ring bearers, the rings, and those pillows they have

    04.05.2012 / Tips + Advice / no comments

For some couples, having children involved in their wedding is a must. For others, incorporating anyone under the age of 18 (or 21) is just not happening. For those of you that are planning on inviting children to be in your wedding party, particularly a dashing little ring bearer, this advice is for you.

The ring bearer role - Most ring bearers are between the ages of 4 and 8 and their main role (besides looking all sorts of handsome) is to signify the rings being brought to the ceremony. If you have a young gentleman you’d like to include but feel he’s too old for the “ring bearer” position, it’s ok not to have one. Technically, any boy older than 10 in the bridal party should be considered a Junior Groomsmen or Junior Usher.

The ring pillow - Traditionally, a pillow is used to tie a set of rings on as the ring bearer carries it down the aisle. You can be creative with this “pillow” and really make it anything you’d like. Etsy provides a lot of fun options for pillows, boxes, dishes, and more – or you can always make something yourself like the girls from Bayside Bride did. Or, if you’re really handy, you can take a book, cut out some of the pages… well, you can see for yourself what this groom tackled.

Attaching the rings - In most cases, there is some type of ribbons or twine to hold the rings in their place on the pillow. My advice is to have a FAKE set of rings attached to said pillow (or object). You can easily purchase plain (fake) silver bands at almost any teen jewelry store (think Claire’s). For pictures, you can always re-stage your real rings attached to the pillow very simply.

Who should have the rings - If you’re using fake rings (or not having a ring bearer), you want to make sure your Best Man has the rings in his pocket. In some cases, the Maid/Matron of Honor will hold the Groom’s ring and the Best Man will hold the Bride’s. No matter who is holding them, make sure they are in a safe location (duh), out of the box or bag they came in and NOT in someone’s hand. When most people get nervous or excited, their hands will sweat more than usual. Putting the ring in their hand will just make it worse. This is easy for the Best Men who usually have a pocket somewhere in their attire. The Maid of Honor isn’t always as lucky. When I was a MOH for my sis (forever ago), I wore the groom’s ring on my thumb which was hidden behind the flowers I was carrying. It was still too big for me, but it worked.

Putting the rings on - There is a trick that if you put a bit of baby powder on your ring finger before the ceremony, the ring will slide easily onto your finger (as long as it’s the right size, naturally). If you don’t do this or it doesn’t work, slide the ring onto the finger as far as it will go and then stop. Wiggle a little side to side, and ease gently further (oh boy). If it doesn’t move further, then stop. Don’t take it off, just leave it where it is. The other person will usually slide it the remaining way in a discreet manner.

Just Julia | On Enjoying the Moment

    03.29.2012 / Etsy Finds / 2 comments

A few weeks ago, we introduced you to our new assistant, Julia, who is also a December bride. After that, she talked to us about the decisions of seating charts vs. escort cards. Today, I wanted to share a story that she sent to me about “enjoying the moment”. It’s something that I believe we all struggle with from time to time, and hopefully it reminds you to take a step back and evaluate.

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

    From Julia:

I don’t know about any of you but this gorgeous weather sure has gotten me out of the house and in a pretty spectacular mood.  There’s nothing quite like driving down the road, blaring some 90s pop and belting along at the top of your lungs.  I was doing just that the other day and I didn’t think there was anything that could bring me down – until I hit every single red light on the road.  And not only did I hit these red lights, but I got stuck behind these awful slow drivers who didn’t know that as soon as the light switched they needed to giddy up.  Green means go drivers!

It was at one of these infamous red lights, stuck behind one of these awful motorists, when I had a revelation.  Just enjoy the moment Julia!  Not only are you healthy, have a car to drive around, are surrounded by incredible friends and family members, and the weather has been breathtaking – you have found an incredible man who loves you to the moon – why try rushing through life when you should be slowing down and enjoying it?

maybe we should snag this beauty from etsy seller, onelifejewelry

I am smack dab in the middle of planning my special day and I can honestly tell you not a day goes by where I don’t wake up and rush to my computer to check my Knot countdown (as if the number that greets me would be anything other than one less than the day before!).  I’ve gotten so caught up in checking things off my to-do list that I feel like I’ve missed out on so many incredible moments, moments I should’ve been enjoying.  So that is my advice to you, fellow fabulous brides: when you’re getting so stressed out and are absolutely hating the whole wedding planning process, take a second and remember why you’re putting yourself through all this.  Soon you will be a happy Mrs. and I encourage you to enjoy every second leading up to that day (and every second after)!

And I would like to remind you that one fool-proof way of being able to enjoy your wedding day and the entire planning process is by working with Danielle Pasternak.  So give us a call and say “hello” to peace-of-mind.

    . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

That being said, ENJOY your Thursday everyone!

    xo,
