Burying the Bourbon: An Interesting Wedding Tradition, To Say The Least
A few months ago, we celebrated Amy and Joe’s Brookside Country Club wedding on a lovely spring day in the Lehigh Valley. Alison Conklin Photography was there to capture every amazing moment, including when our bride and groom “unburied” their bottle of bourbon.
“Why did they do this?” you might ask. Well, let me tell you.

Burying the bourbon is a southern tradition that, if done correctly, is supposed to ward off rain the day of your wedding.
According to Southern Bride and Groom Magazine:
“Those who swear by this Southern myth state that the bride and groom-to-be must visit their venue exactly a month before the wedding date and bury a full bottle of bourbon upside down. Yes, it has to be full and it has to be upside down. The size or origin of the bourbon doesn’t seem to matter, but if you feel Mother Nature might be a bourbon lover, certainly opt for the next size up.”
When your wedding day rolls around, you’re supposed to dig up your bottle after your ceremony and share a drink with your Wedding Party.
In Amy and Joe’s case, we truly had a beautiful, sunny day… right up until they dug up their bottle of bourbon. Once they did, the skies almost immediately turned grey and a slew of thunderstorms started rolling in.
*facepalm*
Luckily, the couple was happy just to celebrate with their favorite family and friends and the rain didn’t affect much of the night. Plus, they got to take photos with their super-fun clear umbrellas in the rain! (A must-have, IMO)

And as a pro tip: if you decide to bury the bourbon for your wedding, make sure to have a towel and some water nearby when you dig it up. Getting dirt on your white attire will not be a cute look and I doubt the dirt will taste very good.
