How Wind Can Affect Your Wedding Day

I have seen many a blog post on preparing for rain on your wedding day. Heck, you’ve even seen one here a few months ago (hopefully). But what I don’t see a lot of talk about it is… windy weddings. Wind can be one of the biggest pain-in-the-butts when it comes to bad weather on your wedding day, but there are some ways that you can prepare for it.

Wind has a way of sneaking up on even the most beautiful sunny day causes some hiccups that you may not be planning for. For example…

Seating Cards

This is a very big one that we deal with a lot. If you are planning on having a nice table outside with your seating cards, it’s crucial that you find a way to weight them down. Tented cards or anything that is similar will easily be blowing away during cocktail hour.

Candles

Candles are a nice way to set the “mood” of the event but candles + outside are almost always a pain. If you’re looking to add some outdoor lighting, consider the ever-famous Christmas string lights or even LED candles (which have been greatly improved over the past few years to look more real). If you plan on having a Unity Candle (or similar) for your ceremony, consider having it in a very tall container where the flame will be protected. BUT keep in mind that it will be very difficult to light the candle and keep them lit throughout your ceremony.

Petals

When you have petals or any other type of lightweight decor, if it isn’t secured somehow, it will be blowing all over the place with just the slightest bit of wind.

Linens

So this is going to be one of the last things that you might think of, but your linens will be affected by wind. You know those hi-top tables that you’re going to have outside for your cocktail hour? Make sure you plan on some type of tie or sash around the neck of the table to eliminate the main linen from blowing all over the place and wreaking havoc. Same goes for any table will be outside without chairs or heavy objects keeping it in place.

Hair and Veils

I’m certainly not going to say to slick your hair back in a bun and don’t wear a veil in order to avoid any wind issues. BUT, you know when you walk out of your house or office JUST after applying your favorite lip gloss and your hair sticks right to your lips? Keep that in mind. If it’s extremely windy, consider going sans veil and throw in a few extra bobby pins. Maybe you just don’t care? Just think about it.
