Having a wedding planner used to be looked at as something that was only for celebrities and luxury weddings. If you were spending six or seven figures on your wedding, then yes, of course, it made sense that you would be investing in your own personal wedding planner.

Venue Coordinators vs. Wedding Coordinators: There IS a difference
There is a common misconception that if your wedding venue provides a venue coordinator, then you do not need to hire you own wedding coordinator. Well, in 95% of cases, I have to say that this is false. A venue coordinator is the NOT the same as a wedding coordinator.
