Creative Spotlight: Forget-Me-Not Vintage Rentals on the DPNAK Weddings Blog

Vintage rentals are a relatively new thing when it comes to wedding day decor, especially in the Eastern PA area. We’ve always seen companies that allow you to rent standard tables, chairs, linens and so on but vintage rental companies give you the opportunity to rent those killer sofa, tables, chairs, and other amazing decor that are FULL of character, charm and history.

We met Renee and Derek of Forget-Me-Not Vintage Rentals this year on a wedding we worked on together in May. Renee was always very quick to respond, stayed incredibly organized and was just a pleasure to work with. One of my favorite things about FMNVR was their willingness to do anything and everything to keep their client happy and often completely surpassed all of our expectations.

So without further ado, meet Renee of Forget-Me-Not Vintage Rentals.

Hello. Who are you?

Renee: Hello!  I’m Renee and I own and operate Forget-Me-Not Vintage Rentals & Event Styling with my other half (Derek – my very own version of a ‘Jack of all trades’).  We are a husband-wife team with a (potentially unhealthy) habit for hoarding totally awesome and unique pieces of furniture that we rent out for weddings and events.  I also provide styling services, which essentially means I can arrive on-site and make sure everything looks beautiful.  Derek and I were both born and raised in good ole’ Berwick, PA and it’s also where we store our stash (a.k.a. our inventory).

Who or what got you started in the industry?

Renee: We didn’t initially set-out to be business owners when the opportunity just, sort of presented itself. I was set for graduate school and Derek was going to trade school to work with my father in HVAC. I guess you could say, our story starts with our own wedding. We got married on June 1, 2013 in my grandparents backyard. Much like couples today, we didn’t want a cookie-cutter wedding. We took our natural tendencies to hoard to the next level and collected 120 unique chairs and a ton of totally eclectic and fun pieces for the big day. It was also a huge bonus that my grandfather, a long-time business owner, had a passion for antiques as well. He was just tickled that we designed our wedding the way we did (I mean seriously, he wanted me to call the local newspaper and ask them to put it on the front page– no joke).  He offered up a lot of his collection for us to use. Sadly, he passed away just a month after our wedding day, but not without leaving us his entire collection of ‘neat old things’ and a place to keep them in. Somewhere in the whole scheme of things our own wedding, we met an a pretty stellar couple that had already ventured into the ‘vintage rental’ business. We found them to be totally inspiring and a seed was planted in our minds. Once everything had fallen into the place the way it did, it felt like fate was making itself known and so Forget-Me-Not was born!  We officially started Forget-Me-Not in July of 2013, and we’ve been rolling with it ever since!

What is your favorite part about being in the wedding world?

Renee: Okay, I can’t speak for Derek, but there is this moment that has become my absolute favorite.  It’s that moment when the bride or groom walks into the reception area just before everything is about start.  That moment when they stand there and take it all in.  For me, it’s always one of the most gratifying moments of the day. I get giddy just  thinking about how Forget-Me-Not had the opportunity to be a part of that moment of awe.

It’s also pretty awesome that we know some of the areas best wedding and event professionals and one of these days we’re going to throw a totally epic party!

Besides weddings, are there any other special events that you service?

Renee: Basically, if you can find a use for our inventory or styling services, we’re game.  We’ve done baby showers, photo-shoots (engagement shoots, family photos, and those adorable wittle baby shoots), engagement parties, rehearsal dinners, birthday parties, and even plays!

What are FIVE adjectives you’d use to describe your style?

Renee: Ummm….Let’s go with:

Creative, weird, bohemian, (yet) mid-century modern, artsy-fartsy

As a stylist, where do you go to be inspired?

Renee: Even though our business name states that we are a ‘vintage’ rental company, we pull our inspiration from a number of old and new sources. We try to stay on top of what is new and cutting edge, so we pay attention to interior and home design trends. We also think it’s important to be involved in what the real bride is looking for so, of course, we follow the industry’s leading wedding blogs (the staples include Style Me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, and Style Unveiled). Pinterest is also a very useful tool when it comes to working with our clients. I work largely based on visuals so it’s not uncommon for us to share inspiration boards that our couples can contribute to as well.

What sets you apart from other fellow rental and vintage rental companies?

Renee: Hmm this is tough because I tend to get equally excited about other vintage rental companies and often look to them for advice and inspiration in the field.  I would say the extent of our styling services sets us apart from other rental/vintage rental companies.  Many vintage rental companies offer styling services, typically on the day of, but we have a range of packages that can get more involved than the standard styling service.  We will work with our clients from the very beginning to formulate a well-focussed vision and offer the service of sourcing basically anything they need to fulfil the overall look of their wedding day.  It can be anything from DIY projects, unique linens, or specific furniture.  Even if it’s not our specialty, we have plenty of ‘friendors’ that we can connect with to get whatever it is that we need to pull of a seamless design.

Whether you’re single, married, divorced, widowed… we all have words of advice when it comes to relationships. What is your advice to couples tying the knot?

Renee: Communication is everything (it’s cliche but it’s true) and throw your dignity out the door.  You’re going to fight, and you’re going to be wrong.  The sooner you can admit that, the sooner you can make-up with each other.

If you were a hamburger, what kind of burger would you be and why?

Renee: This is lame, but I’m a sucker for the standard Wendy’s burger with cheese (the #1), no onion of course.

What is your favorite piece currently in your inventory and why?

Renee: Hands down, our ‘Tattered Table’.  This table has true signs of natural age, which means it wasn’t painted on with chalk paint and wax.  I won it at an auction and when I came around to pick it up, the guy said “a little love and it’ll be  ‘like new’ “.  Clearly we weren’t on the same page.

Aside from weddings, what are some of your other hobbies/hidden talents/secret powers?

Renee: I run our local movie theater, The Berwick Theater, so I’m a bit of a movie nerd.  I’m also taking up macrame this winter.  I’ll let you know how it pans out.

Speaking of super powers, if you could choose to have any, what would you pick?

Renee: Hmmm… Animal Interpretation… I would definitely love to understand what my poochies are saying/thinking!

Finally, how do we connect with you?
